Glen Amey

Obituary of Glen Ronald Amey

December 24, 1934 - Napanee, Ontario

July 23, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Glen Amey, beloved husband of Myrna, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Agape Hospice in Calgary, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at the age of 89 years.

Glen was born December 24, 1934, on the family farm located on the Palace Road near Camden East, Lennox, and Addington County, ON. The last surviving child of his parents, Flossie Jane (nee Clancy)  and Arthur Harold Amey, Glen was predeceased by his two brothers, Fenwick “Fen” Clancy Amey (Irene Potts) and Donald “Don” Arthur Amey; his eight sisters, Gladys Muriel Amey (Frederick Maguire and Thomas Good), Helen Louise Amey (Earl MacDonald), Marguerite (Marg) Agnes Amey (George Shelton), Dorothea Jean Amey, Betty Florence Amey (Hubert Hodges), Mildred (Millie) Geraldine Amey (Garnet Compton and Keith Rose), Doris Naydene Amey (Howard McGreer), and Shirley Jean Aney (Arthur Russell).

Glen moved to Calgary in his twenties, where one of his first jobs was helping build the Trans-Canada Highway through Rogers Pass, following that he embarked on a prosperous career in the oilfield trucking industry. Glen operated three trucks while working in the oil patch, a single axle International, a White Western Star, and his favourite truck ‘The Kenworth’. When he was not on the road Glen could be found gardening, building, repairing, or designing everything from new fences to miniature chuckwagons.

As a young couple, Glen and Myrna bought their forever home in Bowness, which, shortly after, doubled in size when Glen built - by hand - a massive extension to the house.

It wasn’t just the building that grew, but Glen’s family too. Through the 1960s Glen became ‘Dad’ to four children, Lorrie (Kevin), JoAnne, Robert (Cindy), and Daniel (Katrina). He was also ‘Uncle Glen’ to so many nieces and nephews that listing them would fill the page. He loved them all and they loved him.

Throughout the '60s and early '70s, even on holidays, Glen kept on truckin’, driving the family station wagon, trailer in tow, across Western Canada taking the family on vacations through Alberta and BC. In the mid-70s vacations changed as Glen and Myrna bought the first of what would turn out to be five cottages at Sylvan Lake. Glen cherished the time spent ‘at the lake’ with his family, building (and sometimes blowing up) bonfires, following Myrna to Saturday morning garage sales, taking kids to the dump, and heading to the Bentley Farmers’ Market.

Known for his ability to fix almost anything, Glen could poke his head out from changing the oil in a car, glance up across the garage, and tell his helper (usually Rob or Dan) “That's not a 3/8’ that’s a 5/16th!”

A renaissance man, he could also put down his wrench and pick up the spatula, orchestrating family feasts for every occasion. He was particularly renowned for ‘grandpa’s gravy’, the secret of which he passed on to his grandchildren, and ‘basted eggs’ which he introduced to a chef in The Philippines on a trip abroad.

It was in 1986 that Glen became ‘Grandpa’ with the birth of his first grandchild, Meaghan (Alecs), followed by Sam, Kylie (Kelsey), Madeline (Luke), and Nathan. Glen’s house in Bowness and the cabin at Sylvan Lake, were like second homes for his extended family as they grew up.

Entering the new millennium, Glen’s travel experiences widened as he and Myrna embarked on road trips through the United States, tours through South America, and extensive travels through Southeast Asia, culminating in a January 2012 trip to The Philippines for his granddaughter Meaghan’s marriage to Alecs (Reyes).

In September 2012, Glen put the “Great” in ‘Great-grandpa’ following the birth of the first of three great-grandchildren Zander, followed by William in 2015, and his namesake, Amey in 2018. Glen cherished time with his children, and grandchildren, teaching them valuable life skills, and more than occasionally playing pranks on them.

One of Glen’s favourite expressions which he said to anyone heading out on a trip was “Shiny side up, rubber side down”.

So, as he embarks on his final journey it’s time for us to say “Glen -keep the shiny side up.”
