Obituary of Eleanor Jean Hamilton

May 13, 1937 – Edmonton, Alberta

June 10, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor Jean Lilly Hamilton.

Jean is survived by her children, Heather (Darren) Hamilton, Bonnie Hamilton, Douglas Hamilton, and Scott Hamilton. She also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren, Kierra, Kamryn, Samuel, Nicole, Taylor, and Tate. Jean is further survived by her brother, Douglas Lilly. She was predeceased by her sisters, Helen Potter and Alison Douglas Lilly; and her parents, Hilda and Arthur Lilly. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly, especially the Southgate Coffee Clatch.

Jean's early years were spent in Edmonton. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Languages and completed her Bachelor of Education degree in 1961. After two years of teaching, Jean dedicated herself to raising her four children. Once her children were older, Jean returned to her passion for teaching, working with Edmonton Public Schools for 27 years. She was a pioneer, being one of the first public school teachers to introduce French at the elementary level.

Jean's life was marked by a continuous pursuit of deeper spirituality. She found great solace and strength in her faith community, serving on the Board of Directors of Operation Friendship in Edmonton's inner city from 1980 to 1983.

In her later years, Jean's grandchildren were the light of her life. They eagerly awaited her visits, especially when she brought her magical brown box filled with delightful surprises. Her mud pies during the holidays were a family favourite, creating cherished memories for all.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cambridge Manor in Calgary and the Stilton Community for their exceptional care and compassion. Jean will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
