Obituary of Alvin Roland Stewart

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Alvin Stewart of Cochrane, AB, on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the age of 95 years.

 

He was born on May 21, 1929, in Spruce Lake, SK. The family moved to Oliver, BC, when he was nine, then to Calgary, AB, when he was ten. Alvin attended King George Jr. High School in NW Calgary.

 

His first job was working for Underwood Typewriters. After a short stint, Alvin went to work for his uncle Neil Riley on a ranch in the Willow Creek area west of Nanton. In 1947, Alvin moved back to Calgary and started working for CP Railway at the young age of nineteen. His first job with the CPR was yard checker. After moving up in his career he oversaw the inbound and outbound trains moving through the Alyth Yard, his position of yardmaster was in store for the next three years. His career then evolved into a trainyard coordinator for all of Alyth Yard and the surrounding area until his retirement in 1987.

 

He enjoyed playing baseball, football, as well as hockey. He played hockey for the Calgary Buffalo Association and later played in the Big 6 Hockey League out of the Calgary Corral.

 

He Met Darlene in 1951 at a dance in Calgary and then married her in 1952. Their first home was located on Stanley Road in Calgary. Here their son Roland was born in 1953, with their daughter Sherry being born in 1954. Their next house was on Rosehill Drive, where they lived until Alvin’s Retirement in 1987. They then moved to Qualicum Beach, BC, where they spent the next 16 years of retirement. Darlene passed away on January 1, 2003, in Nanaimo, BC. Alvin moved back to Calgary to be closer to family and eventually spent his remaining years living in Cochrane.

 

He is survived by his daughter Sherry McCall (Ralph), grandsons Michael McCall of Cochrane, and Calvin McCall (Jenna) of Red Deer County, and great-grandchildren Hunter McCall, Taya McCall, and Kye McCall.

 

Alvin was predeceased by his wife Darlene Stewart, son Roland Lee Stewart, his parents Roland James Stewart and Hannah Marie Stewart, and his sister Erma Milgate.

 

The family would like to thank all the staff at Hawthorne Memory Care for their care and compassion for Alvin.

 

As per Alvin’s wishes, a private family service will be held.
