Obituary of Dorothy Olivia Kapty

October 24, 1927 – Calgary, Alberta

June 13, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Dorothy Kapty (nee Yaworenko), beloved wife of George Kapty, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the age of 96 years.

Dorothy was born in Calgary, AB, on October 24, 1927. Her strength was forged through great adversity. Her faith in God sustained her through her many challenges. She was kind-hearted, always thought of others first, intelligent, and steadfast.

Dorothy’s family moved to Saskatchewan and started out with a homestead, and they later purchased more land. Dorothy grew up on the farm and was an extremely hard worker, taking care of the cows, horses, the garden, and helping with stooking and thrashing especially. She enjoyed swimming at the dam with her siblings.

She graduated from grade eight from the one-room schoolhouse. She always wanted to go on to further her education. She believed strongly in the value of education and passed that value on to her children. She moved back to Calgary as an adult. She trained and worked as a hairdresser along with working in a biscuit factory. She was one of the fastest packers in the factory, getting numerous pay raises. Dorothy married George in 1948. Shortly after, she was a young mother to her son Robert and daughter Lily.

She and George took pride in maintaining their yard and were constantly getting compliments from the neighbours and passersby. Both Dorothy and George loved nature. She loved her vegetable garden and spent time caring for it every day.

Dorothy was proud of making her own financial decisions.

Her most memorable vacation was when she travelled to Hawaii.

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters and one son-in-law, Natasha and Darcy in Calgary, and Lily in Gatineau, QC; one son and his wife, Robert and Pauline in Kitchener, ON; four grandchildren, Pamela, Amy, and Sarah in Kitchener, ON, and Ashley in Ottawa, ON; and eight great-grandchildren, Aven in Ottawa, ON, and Emma, Ryan, Grais, Niles, Kenzi, Kylar, and Kytt in Kitchener, ON. She is also survived by her younger brother George, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband George, and her siblings, Margaret, Helen, Anne, Irene, Sheila, Lucy, Lily, Betty, and William.
