Obituary of William Alexander Barton

July 26, 1931 – Cereal, Alberta

June 18, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Barton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully with his son Dave by his side on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the age of 92 years.

He is survived by his two sons, Dave (Roberta) and Bruce (Nathan); two grandchildren, David (Brenna) and Christopher (Jenna); and two great-grandchildren, Elle and Ethan. He was predeceased by his wife Beverley, his father Russell, his mother Alice, and siblings, Lester, Harold, Margaret, Francis, Mildred, and Robert.

Bill was born in Cereal, AB, and grew up in the Albert Park area of Calgary. After schooling, he took a part-time position at the local gas station and was self-taught in repairing cars. This is where he met Beverley; they were soon married in 1954, and shortly after, he started working for the City of Calgary Electric System as a lineman and made his way into management, retiring in 1984.

Bev and Bill built their family home in Millican-Odgen in 1957, raised their family, took on a renovation in 1975 and resided there until 2022.

Bill was an excellent gardener, loved his garage, tossed many a line in the water, watched hockey, followed the kids in hockey, enjoyed having his many friends over to our home, and as everyone knows, he loved a warm Pilsner beer.

Across the street were his neighbours, Susan and Billy, who always looked out for him and Bev. Dad enjoyed his daily walk with Susan and all the dogs, rain or shine.

One of his favourite pastimes was hunting, and the garage was always a hub of activity in the autumn and winter months; his hunting buddies will certainly miss that time in his garage.

After his retirement, he was instrumental in the care of Beverley. “In sickness and in health”; he was truly committed to those words. We thank you, Dad, for all you did for Mom; it was one of your finest achievements.

After Beverley passed, he went on to travel and found himself in all parts of the world including The Bahamas, New York City, Boston, a safari in Africa, Vancouver, and New Brunswick, to name just a few.

In 2022, he moved into Heartland, an assisted living home in Okotoks, and everywhere he went he was known as the "thumbs-up" guy.

Well, Bill, Dad, we give you the biggest thumbs-up for a well-lived life; we will deeply miss you.
