February 26, 1951 – Vancouver, British Columbia

June 29, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Martin McDonald, father of Hilary (Jeff) Renno and Jessica Weber, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the age of 73 years. He was born in Vancouver, BC, on February 26, 1951, to Leila and John Robert McDonald.

Martin attended the Royal Roads Military College of Canada, first in Victoria, BC, demonstrating outstanding leadership and excellent performance on examinations. He then attended the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, ON. He continued to pursue his passion for education at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating from their law program with distinction. He was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus and volunteered his time to various organizations. After graduation, he excelled in his career and was known for his hard work and determination.

Martin was a good athlete and enjoyed most sports, particularly football, rugby and skiing. He was an exceptional public speaker, an accomplished bridge player and had a lifelong love for learning. He found a deep sense of fulfillment in working with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, something he did for many years.

Martin will be fondly remembered by his family. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He was also a loving sibling to his brothers, Alec and Bryan; and his sister, Debra (Peter) Jennings.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Cathlin Mutch and the staff at Garrison Green for taking such good care of Martin in his final days. Their kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there.

I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow;

I am the diamond glints on the snow;

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;

I am the gentle autumn’s rain.

When you waken in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there, I did not die

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 14 St SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall of the Church for friends.
