Kartar Dhaliwal

Obituary of Kartar Kaur Dhaliwal

October 10, 1937 - Punjab, India

July 6, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Kartar Dhaliwal beloved wife of the late Surjit Singh Dhaliwal of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at the age of 86 years.

Kartar was born in Punjab, India, on October 10, 1937. She moved to Malaysia in her early life and lived there until she was around the age of twelve. During her time there, she connected with local children, made fond memories, and even learned Malay, some of which she remembered in her final life. She also endured the events of World War II during her time in Malaysia. Despite any struggle in her life, Kartar's spirit remained bright and loving, as she took care of many animals and pets, as well as remembering those who helped her when she was little.

After the war, Kartar moved back to Punjab and continued her life there. Kartar later married Surjit Singh Dhaliwal in Punjab, India, and raised four children. Kartar’s greatest responsibility was to her children, who have all grown up and successfully immigrated to Canada from Punjab. Through her efforts, her children could live a greater life in a country with more opportunities, made only possible by a lifetime of sacrifices and hard work from Kartar. Furthermore, Kartar raised many of her grandchildren and even great-grandchildren, nurturing life throughout the entirety of hers, like a true mother.

She will be most remembered for her caring nature and kindness, as well as her will to take care of others as she did her entire life. No matter how much she struggled or aged, Kartar always looked after her children and grandchildren. She will also be remembered for her beautiful smile and heartwarming presence. After migrating to Canada herself, Kartar spent the rest of her life as a caring grandmother, looking after children and becoming an important part of her grandchildren's lives. Near the end of her life, her grandchildren took care of her, learning from Kartar’s caring behaviour and spirit.

One thing Kartar loved was eating a wide variety of foods. Kartar would often reminisce of eating different fruits and other snacks during her childhood, saying that she used to eat many delicious things. She particularly enjoyed eating durian fruit, which she got a chance to try again thanks to her grandson.

Kartar is survived by her extended family across Canada and India, Punjab. This includes her two daughters and two sons, with their respective families and grandchildren, as well as Kartar’s great-grandchildren, which Kartar had the opportunity to see herself and help raise. Kartar blessed over fifteen of her grandchildren with her presence and was more than happy to see them herself.
