Obituary of Joy Carscadden

December 29, 1930 – Gleichen, Alberta

July 12, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Joy Carscadden of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the age of 93 years.

Joy was born in Gleichen, AB, on December 29, 1930. She graduated from the Alberta College of Art with a degree in Commercial Art.

Joy was a commercial pilot and flight instructor for 50 years, working at Trenton Flying Club in Ontario, Abbotsford, and Springbank. She was instrumental in establishing The Thrill of Flight component offered in the Alberta public school curriculum, and in creating the Mountain Flying course for Mount Royal College and was honoured nationally for her contributions to aviation education.

She was a member of the Second Sixties, Glamorgan Gals Golf Club, Calgary Curling Club, Alberta Aviation Council, was a director of the Calgary Airport Business Association and was an executive member of the Quarter Century Aviation Club of Calgary. Joy greatly enjoyed volunteering at the 1988 Olympics.

Joy accomplished much throughout her life and was particularly proud when she was invited to fly with The Snowbirds and, after appropriate ground school, flew inverted, did rolls, and ultimately flew in formation with the Team. Truly a personal and professional thrill, highlight, and honour.

Joy loved to curl and ski and continued to golf until she was 90.

Significant travel opportunities included Switzerland, England, Italy, Kenya & Tanzania, Panama Canal and Caribbean cruises, Alaska and the Yukon, eventually visiting all of Canada’s provinces and territories except for Nunavut. Her favourite vacations, however, were spent camping with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her two daughters Catherine “Cat” Taylor, and Marily (Rob) Quinn of Calgary, AB; her three grandchildren, Benjamin Quinn, Megan (Jeremy) Froese, Lindsey (Ty Jackson) Taylor.

Joy was predeceased by her late husband Gerald “Jerry” Carscadden, parents Bill and Mildred Sutermeister, and sister Pauline Kay.

Joy will be most remembered for her joy of life, love of nature, sense of humour and unending support and love for her family.

A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
