Obituary of Sylvia Cornelia Wood

September 30, 1948 – Rotterdam, Holland

July 20, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Sylvia Wood (nee DeVos), beloved wife of James Wood, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the age of 75 years. Sylvia was born in Rotterdam, Holland, on September 30, 1948. She moved to Calgary in 1953.

Sylvia attended Forest Lawn High School, where she met Jim over fried chicken and homemade cookies. They were married in 1967.

Sylvia held many positions throughout her career, including administrative roles at CPR and Rent Right. She enjoyed working at Sears and Woodward’s and found particular joy in her work as a lunchroom support at Renfrew Educational Services. Sylvia later retired from the Calgary Board of Education.

Sylvia’s greatest joys were spending time with family and friends. She loved hosting any social occasion, from parties and celebrations to meals, lunch, tea times, or afternoon drinks. She will be most remembered for her delightful home-cooked meals, her love for her family, and her dedication to her grandchildren.

Besides her loving husband, James, Sylvia is survived by her children, Shelly Wood (Kevin Fitzsimons), and Michael Wood (Lisa Machedo); brother, Lou DeVos, grandchildren, Cyrena Wood (Joey Arnold), Jessica Wood, Alysa Wood (Brock Way), Kole Fitzsimons (Alison Fitzsimons), Karson (Aniqa Noor), and Gordon Fitzsimons; and one great-grandson, Johnathan, as well many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, Maarten DeVos and Cornelia DeVos; and her brother, Odie Devos. She was also predeceased by Tom and Angelina Wood, Marcel and Carmel Weyts, Judy Watson, Lenny Cook, and her nephew, Bruce Disturnal.

Sylvia’s Family would also like to thank Dr. Bahlis, as well as the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their continuous support and care.

A Celebration of Sylvia’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
