Obituary of Helder Barcelos Meneses

July 20, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Helder Meneses of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the age of 57 years. Helder immigrated to Canada from Terceira Azores, Portugal, with his family in 1969. As a boy, he was passionate about all sports, especially hockey and handball. His career in the hospitality industry led him to meet the love of his life, Heather. Together, they opened their own restaurant in Bragg Creek, aptly named Heaven’s Gate, which became one of his proudest achievements. Soon after, they moved to Crawford Bay, BC, where they resided for approximately 20 years. After the passing of his wife and father, Helder returned to Calgary to live with his mother.

Helder’s greatest joys were his family and friends, the great outdoors, camping, golfing, fishing, and the many dogs that shared his life.

Helder is survived by his mother, Liduina Meneses, sister, Sylvia (Noel) Marcelo, brother, Roberto (Hana) Meneses, nephews, Kaden and Karson; and many extended family members and friends, including his companion, Michele Menzies. He was predeceased by his wife, Heather Meneses, and his father, Helio Meneses.

We as a family grieve this loss, our only comfort comes from the fact that he passed doing what he loved.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Community Church (800 85 St SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
