Manfred Sturmer

Obituary of Manfred Robert Sturmer

April 21, 1937 – Bochum, Germany

July 30, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Manfred Robert Sturmer of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

Manfred was born in the town of Bochum, Germany on April 21, 1937. After losing his father to the war at a very young age, Manfred was raised by his mother and grandmother to become an exceptionally hard-working, considerate, kind, and fun-loving man who will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Completing his masonry ticket in Germany, Manfred immigrated to Calgary, AB in 1957 to join his sister Irene and her husband Gunther Rempe with a plan of starting their own company. Once their families were established, that dream became a reality when BBC Masonry was formed in 1969. Manfred was especially proud to eventually have all three sons join him in the business, which became a well-respected cornerstone of the industry in Calgary.

In 1959, Manfred met the love of his life Erika. They were married in 1960 and welcomed sons, Robert, Oliver, and Patrick, in the years that followed. The family spent many wonderful years travelling throughout Canada and the world – with their Kauai, Hawaii condo being their favourite spot to enjoy with friends and family.

He will be most remembered for his love of sports, particularly soccer, and music, with his random bursts of spontaneous song, a raucous party, and above all - family.

Besides his loving wife Erika, Manfred is survived by his sons, Oliver (Silvia) and Patrick (PeggySue); his grandchildren, Cooper (Alexis), Jace, Paxton, Olivia, and Stella; his dear friend of 70 years Eberhart, brother-in-law Gunther, nephew Dennis (Marcia), nieces, Nicole (Glenn) and Janice, and their families; and many, many wonderful friends and family around the world.

Manfred was predeceased by his parents, Rudolph and Anna Sturmer; partner-in-crime Wolfgang (1987), eldest son Robert (2011), nephew Ronald (2015), sister Irene (2022), and niece Gudrun (2023).

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Boniface German Catholic Church (1923 Broadview Road N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
