Obituary of Dan Kaplan

October 13, 1982 – Sarnia, Ontario

July 31, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Dan Kaplan, beloved husband of Jodie Kaplan of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at the age of 41 years, after a valiant battle with colon cancer. The courage and resilience he displayed throughout his six-month fight will be remembered and admired by all who knew him.

Born in Sarnia, ON, Dan was the third of four children of Dvora and Ronnie Kaplan. Those who knew Dan will always remember his quick wit, charismatic personality, and fiery spirit. As a child, he was known for his countless practical jokes, especially on his older brother, and for keeping his family entertained and on their toes. At age thirteen, Dan’s family moved to Calgary, AB, when his father was transferred to manage the Joffre polyethylene plant with Nova Chemicals. Dan cherished the memories and friendships he made during his summers at Camp Kinneret in Mont-Tremblant, QC, where he thrived both as a camper and later as a camp counsellor.

He earned his Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of Ottawa, where he was a proud member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. Later, Dan received an MBA from the University of Calgary with a specialization in Finance while working full-time at TC Energy. Over sixteen years, he made a significant impact at TC Energy, starting as part of the inaugural cohort of the Canada Gas new grad rotation program and culminating his career in one of the most impactful, broad-reaching roles in the entire company, as the Director of Portfolio Management. In this role, Dan was at the heart of the company’s corporate strategy execution and ensured TC Energy maintained the right mix of assets to meet both shorter-term financial goals and longer-term strategic objectives, always with a focus on maximizing shareholder value. These experiences shaped Dan into a person of integrity, deeply valuing collaboration and camaraderie.

Dan shared a beautiful life with his wife, Jodie, their two children, Kyle Ivy and Charlie Abraham, and their beloved wheaten terrier, Otis. The nine years they spent together were filled with love, joy, and countless cherished memories. Dan took immense pride in his ability to balance his successful career with the love and support of his family. Jodie and Dan shared a deep connection on many levels and bonded in a way that nurtured authenticity and created profound trust and commitment despite any possible life challenge. Their shared love, admiration and commitment exemplified that of best friends and soul mates. As a devoted father, he never missed a dance recital or gymnastics class, fully embracing his role as a "girl-dad". One of Dan’s most treasured experiences was taking paternity leave in January 2024 to spend time with his infant son, Charlie, creating lifelong memories during that precious time. When Dan received his diagnosis, he dedicated every ounce of energy not only to fighting his battle but also to creating and preserving as many memories as possible. He often said that his life became very simple, focusing on three things: doing everything in his power to make his wife happy, putting a smile on his children’s faces, and fighting like hell to live another day. Dan faced his illness with courage, dignity, and indomitable spirit.

Dan’s final moments were shared with his brother Gil, sisters Noa and Belle, and wife Jodie by his side. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Oncology and Palliative care teams at the Foothills Medical Center, with special thanks to Dr. Sasha Lupichuk and Dr. Jordan Zeppieri for helping Dan fight his battle with dignity and on his own terms.
