Obituary of Douglas Grant Fairbairn
April 13, 1933 – Loverna, Saskatchewan
August 9, 2024 – Okotoks, Alberta
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa, great-grandpa, papa, uncle and friend, Douglas “Doug” Grant Fairbairn who passed peacefully on August 9, 2024, in Okotoks, AB.
Born on April 13, 1933, in Loverna, SK, Doug grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan before moving to Calgary at the age of 19. It was there that Doug began a career that would span decades; starting as a mechanic and rig hand before finding his niche in the chemical industry in sales at Van Waters & Rogers Chemicals Ltd. Doug had a very successful and rewarding career spanning four decades and working his way up to Manager in the Calgary office.
Upon his retirement at the age of 60, Doug embarked on a new chapter with his beloved wife, Maureen. Together they lived a loving life of travel, golf and spending time with their family and friends. Doug spent many hours woodworking making many beautiful pieces of furniture and decorative items for his friends and family.
As he lived his life, Doug continually chose love, understanding, compassion, forgiveness and encouragement, becoming a role model for many. He continued to extend his genuine kindness to each person he met through the last days of his life and is fondly remembered by everyone.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, sister Margaret (Ron), daughters, Tammy (Greg), Cheryl (Craig) and Mary (Kim); grandchildren, Amanda, Alexander, Luke, Sydney, Gabrielle, Shaina (Terrence), Kristen (Kieran), and Blake (Dakota); great-grandchildren, Olivia and Emily; nieces and nephews, Karen (Steve), Brenda (Charlie), and Bruce (Jill); and his many great-nieces and great-nephews. Doug is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Alexina; siblings, Ralph, Dianna, Charles (Chuck), and Gail; and nephew Wesley.
We are forever grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care he received from Dr. William Fortin and his wife Robbie and the Care teams in the Rapid Access Unit at South Calgary Campus and Foothills Country Hospice.
As per Doug’s wishes, no formal services will be held.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the Foothills Country Hospice, Box 274, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1A5, Telephone: 403-995-4673, www.countryhospice.org.
