Obituary of Catherine Marie Saunders

April 20, 1955 – Stephenville, Newfoundland

August 13, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with immensely sad hearts that we announce Catherine (Cathy) Saunders passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the age of 69 years.

Cathy was born on April 20, 1955, to Kenneth and Bertha Johnson in Stephenville, NL. She lovingly raised her four daughters together with their late father, Randy Saunders in Bay Bulls, NL. Cathy took pride in serving her community for many years as postmaster; welcoming everyone with a kind, friendly smile, and selflessly leading many young women on educational adventures while volunteering as a Girl Guide Leader. Known as "Momma Cat" by her daughters and their large group of friends who also viewed Cathy as a mom, her love and kindness for her family and friends was an important and cherished part of her life.

In 2014, Cathy moved to Calgary, AB, to help raise her grandchildren, Kaden and Logan, who she loved and adored with all of her heart, and with whom had created a special bond. Cathy enjoyed her final years to the fullest with her partner, John Corcoran, (who was a match for her larger-than-life personality), family and friends. Her sparkle, sense of humour, sunny personality, and warm conversations were loved and will be remembered by all who had the opportunity and pleasure of knowing her.

Cathy will be lovingly remembered by John and his family; her four daughters, Lisa Baker (Tony), Nicole Saunders (Shamus Kealey), Meighan Saunders (Frank Ryan), and Ashley Saunders (Pete Miskell); three siblings, Marjorie Paul (Darrell), Ed Johnson (Susan), and Ken Johnson (Tammy); two grandsons, Kaden Baker and Logan Baker; many fur grand-babies, as well as a beloved and far-reaching circle of extended family and friends. Cathy is predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Bertha Johnson; and brother James (Jim) Johnson.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the gathering area of the Church. Graveside Services will be at a later date at St. Stephen’s Cemetery in Stephenville, NL, where Cathy will be laid to rest with her family.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Saunders' service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
