Hazel Callbeck

Obituary of Hazel Jean Callbeck

March 4, 1955 - Prince Albert, Saskatchewan

August 19, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Hazel Callbeck, beloved wife of Murray Callbeck, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully with her devoted husband at her side on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the age of 69 years.

There are many cherished names in our lives—wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. These were all worn proudly by Hazel, a beautiful soul with a smile that won over hearts everywhere she went.

Hazel was born to Elsie and Bertram Wilkinson in Prince Albert, SK, on March 4, 1955.  She grew up on the farm at Lily Plain with her siblings.  In 1973 she met Murray, and they were married the following year. A family soon followed, and they were blessed with three sons.  She was immensely proud of all her children, staying at home to raise the boys.  Anyone who knew Hazel knows she would say that her family was the best part of her life.

Hazel loved to travel.  She and Murray travelled together to many places in the world.  From Vietnam to Norway; Candle Lake, SK to Mexico.  Known for her packing skills, we all marvelled at how she managed to pack the five of them, food and clothes, plus a fully grown rottweiler into the T-Bird for trips to the cabin.  Her favourite recent trip was an Alaskan cruise, where she was joined by her entire family. She talked frequently and lovingly about the time spent with her sons, daughters-in-law and especially her grandchildren on that trip.

While Hazel had many talents, none were so praised and appreciated by her family and friends more than her incredible cooking. It brought Hazel great joy to prepare delicious meals for family and friends gathered around the table. No restaurant or master chef could compete with some of Hazel’s classics like Caesar salad, baklava and spanakopita.

The family would like to thank Hazel’s oncologist Dr. Morris, the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the staff at South Health Campus, and the staff at the Southwood Hospice.  Thank you all for your love and care during her illness.

Left to mourn and remember Hazel are her family: husband Murray; sons Jim (Angela), Rudy (Carolyn), and Jeremy; and her grandchildren Henry, Colin, Nathan and Emma.  Also left to mourn Hazel are her many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Hazel made friends wherever she went and maintained contact with high school friends and friends from around the world. They, too, will miss her dearly.

A private interment will take place at a later date.
