Obituary of Lucie Just

December 1, 1929 - Kronau, Germany

August 20, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Lucie went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 94 years old.

Lucie lived her life in service. After the early death of her mother, she moved to Heidelberg, Germany, to become a nurse at the University of Heidelberg. She became an OR nurse and joined a group of mobile trauma nurses and doctors who travelled to accidents on the Autobahn. She remained very close to her youngest sister Edeltrude, who married and had two children. After the death of her boyfriend in a railway accident, Lucie decided to move to Canada. She was corresponding with a nurse friend who had already made the move and was working in Canada. She immigrated in 1959 and settled in Toronto with her nurse friend Anna. Lucie’s only daughter Beate was born in 1960. In 1961, Lucie moved west to Calgary, where she worked as a nurse at Bethany Calgary. When a group of her friends decided to move to California, Lucie planned to join them but was offered a job at the Holy Cross Hospital.

She stayed at Holy Cross in various positions until she became Head Nurse of postpartum. She transferred to Rockyview General Hospital when the Holy Cross Hospital closed, continuing there until she retired at the age of 66. Retirement was hard for Lucie, as nursing was such a large part of her life. She then devoted her life to volunteering her services in the Catholic Church. She enjoyed many roles, including Catholic Women’s League, sacristan, and distributing Holy Communion to hospitals and senior homes. She did this until Alzheimer’s began to take her vitality. All her friends, her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren can attest to Lucie’s feistiness and character right until the end. She remained quintessentially Lucie and will be missed terribly.

Lucie loved to travel, especially to Germany to spend time with her siblings. She also had a beautiful Samoyed dog named Gina, who she treasured.

She is survived by her daughter Beate, three granddaughters, Meghan (Rob), Chelsea (Fil), and Stephanie; and three great-grandsons, Hunter, Hawkins, and Anton.

Predeceased by her father Richard Just, her mother Magdalene Just, and her siblings, Blandine, Carl, Clothilde, Paul, Hans, Gretel, Edeltrude, and Günter.
