Obituary of Robert Michael Lalonde
March 26, 1955 - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
August 24, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Bob was born March 26, 1955, in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, and passed away peacefully at home in Calgary, AB, on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the age of 69 years, after a battle with cancer.
He was the beloved husband of Susan Lalonde (nee Haubrich) for 35 years and a proud and loving father of two sons, Jordan and Austin. Survived by his mother Lucille (Lou) Leclair, and brother David (Cindy). Bob was predeceased by his father Denzil Lalonde, and sister Janet Bock (Gerry). Bob had a close connection to his many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and their spouses/partners during his years in Calgary; Bernard Haubrich (deceased) and wife Sharon, Kathy (Bob) Clay, Claire (Gerry-d) Curial, Ed Haubrich, Carol (Dave) Bailey, Julie (Lesley Sutherland) Haubrich, Joanne (Keith) Meszaros, and Terry (Mark Melymick) Haubrich. Loved and respected by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews — a good friend to all.
Bob's passion for competitive sports ignited early in life. He quickly became an expert downhill skier and raced for several years. He also played high school basketball and football. A knee injury bothered him through his adult life, yet he continued to ski and became a student of the game of golf, a game he loved and played until he could no longer. His competitive spirit and love of sports are manifested in both sons.
His passion for electronics and mechanics led him to obtain a diploma in software and hardware design from Algonquin College and a Computer Science university degree from the University of Calgary. This expertise led to varied work with companies big and small, which included worldwide travel. This same appeal led him to be Mr. Fix-it as well. He completed many DIY renovations at home and at his vacation property. He was always available to lend a hand to others. His free time was filled with reading, a new fondness for landscaping, and the entertaining CNN coverage of American politics.
