Obituary of George Frederick Webb

April 25, 1941 – Halifax, Nova Scotia

August 24, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

George Frederick Webb, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the age of 83 years.

George was born in Halifax, NS, on April 25, 1941.  He was the eldest of three children born to Helen and Harold Webb.

George’s childhood and youth were profoundly impacted by his father’s career in the Royal Canadian Air Force.  His family lived on bases throughout Canada during the 1940’s and 50’s, from Vancouver to Whitehorse to Ottawa and everywhere in between.  George was born a rolling stone, loved the music of the Rolling Stones (Elvis, Leonard Cohen, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Queen…) and lived his life as a rolling stone.  George was a spiritual man and gained solace from his faith throughout his life. 

After a short stint in the Air Force as a recreation specialist, George studied Kinesiology at the University of Calgary and completed a diploma in Education from the University of Lethbridge.  George taught throughout southern Alberta moving into more senior roles as Vice-Principal and Principal.  His career took him to Australia and the UK which he considered highlights of his life.  He loved helping people, especially his students reach their potential both academically and athletically.  Coaching volleyball was a great joy as he led many of his teams to both provincial and national championships.

George loved education and teaching.  He continued to advance his own education well into retirement auditing university courses and devouring books on literature, art, politics, and history. No one could touch him in a game of Trivial Pursuit.  His early interest in technology allowed him to develop programs to streamline student report cards. Once retired, he took his love of technology and teaching and combined them to become the go-to man for used Mac/Apple products.  He was affectionately and professionally known as “MacGuy”.

George was a great adventurer and always looked forward to trying new things. In Australia he developed a love for thoroughbred horseracing, both owning them and betting on them.  Golf was a lifelong passion that he shared with his family and friends.  He travelled to Ireland to watch the Ryder Cup and golfed his way around Canada and other parts of the world, playing at many iconic courses including St. Andrews.

George enjoyed life and loved to socialize and meet new people.  He prioritized experiences over things.  He loved grabbing a coffee with friends at McDonalds, meeting up at the casino on race day, and enjoying as well as preparing special meals for friends and family; all while engaging in lively conversation on local events and politics.

His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Andrew and Danielle. The antics of his “grandpuppy” Pearl provided hours of enjoyment.

George is survived by his daughter Dianne Victoria (Vicki) Webb, son-in-law Clayton Campbell, and daughter Adrienne Webb of Calgary, AB.

George is also survived by his brother Robert Webb of Lethbridge AB, his former wife Eva Webb, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. 

George was predeceased by his beloved parents, Harold and Helen Webb and his younger sister Lynnda Webb.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers and professionals that supported George throughout his time in long-term care.

A Celebration of George's Life will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion #264, (1918 Kensington Road NW, 2nd floor, 403-283-5264) on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Free parking on site with registration.
