Obituary of Ramiro Jarencio Contreras

March 13, 1935 – Sigma, Capiz, Philippines

August 31, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ramiro “Ramy” Contreras, beloved husband of the late Juldea (Julding) Monzon, of Calgary, AB, who passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the age of 89 years.

Ramy was born on March 13, 1935, in Sigma, Capiz, Philippines. In 1958, he met his wife Julding Monzon, and they married in 1960, making their home in Imus, Cavite. In August 1972, Ramy immigrated to Calgary, AB, Canada, with his wife and children, where he lived until his passing.

Ramy worked for several years at Western Aluminum Products as a foreman and at CP Rail and Prudential Steel in Calgary, AB. In addition to his professional work, he was a dedicated volunteer, serving as an usher at St. Mark's Church. Ramy was actively involved in serving the Filipino community in Calgary. He was one of the founders and served as the President of the VISMINSA (Visayas and Mindanao of Southern Alberta) Filipino Association. He was also one of the founders of the PCCF (Philippine Cultural Centre Foundation) in Calgary. This center is now being used and enjoyed by the Calgary Filipino community, and other ethnic and community groups.

Besides his community involvement, Ramy was also an active gun club member and had a passion for big game hunting and fishing, which he enjoyed sharing with his late wife, Julding. He also shared his love for camping, hunting, and fishing with many friends and family, creating cherished memories of those times spent together.

Ramy will be lovingly remembered by his children, Gertie (Baby) (Manny) Lucero, Roberto Contreras and Lou Legaspi, Rico (Belinda) Contreras, and Aurea (Auring) Contreras; his grandchildren, Shannon (Jessieca) Lucero, Bradley Contreras, Lauren (Kevin) Jarin, Nikko Contreras, and Christian (Melissa) Contreras; as well as his great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Alex, Mason, Olivia, and Ellie.

He is also survived by his sister Ruth (Amado) Santiago, brother Eduardo (Jane) Contreras, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Ramy was preceded in death by his parents, Elpidio Contreras and Aurora Jarencio Contreras; his wife Julding Monzon Contreras, daughter Victoria Caroline, his sisters, Teresita Reyes and Helen Contreras; brother Roldan Contreras, and daughter-in-law Marites Ramos Contreras.

His family and friends will miss him dearly.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all our friends and families who have shown their love and support during this difficult time. Special thanks to the staff at Covenant Care–St. Teresa Place for their compassionate care of Ramy.

Ramy will forever be remembered for his unconditional love for his family and his dedication to everything he did. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
