Obituary of Muriel Bernice Mawer

September 10, 1926 – Melfort, Saskatchewan

September 3, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Muriel Bernice Mawer on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the age of 97 years in Calgary, AB.

Muriel was born to Simpson and Clara Fraser in Melfort, SK, on September 10, 1926. Muriel was the first of five children. Muriel met Don while working at the post office in Melfort, where he was stationed as a Constable RCMP officer. Muriel and Don soon married on December 10, 1949, and remained together for over 50 years until Don passed away.

She joined Don as he was transferred across the country, to places such as Ottawa, Corner Brook, and Winnipeg; they eventually retired in Calgary.

Muriel is survived by her daughter Margret Mawer, grandchildren, Kylie, Logan, and Cassia (Joe); as well as great-grandchildren, Madison, Carmen, and Wyatt; sister Hughene, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Don Mawer, son Bill Mawer, sisters, Sheila and Jean; and brother Hector.

Muriel was a woman who loved unconditionally and had open arms and compassion for everyone she crossed paths with. Many lifelong friends of 50-plus years are mourning her loss alongside her family.

If you knew Muriel, you knew she cherished you in a way that no one else could. Her friendships meant the world to her, and she lived by her phone, it allowed her to keep in contact with anyone and everyone, and to check-in. Muriel was the matriarch of her family, the soul who held everyone together. She will be deeply missed.

Muriel is at peace with her loved ones who passed before her. It is with great sadness to announce her passing, but also with the purest of beauty to know she is in God’s hands.

The family would like to thank the care staff at AgeCare SkyPointe in Taradale East and West for the gentleness, kindness, and compassion they gave Muriel over her time there. No words can express the family’s appreciation.

Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
