Obituary of Troy Curtis
December 6, 1960 – Calgary, Alberta
September 17, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Troy embodied the Viking spirit of otherworldliness. He was immensely proud of his heritage, influenced by the close upbringing he enjoyed with his Norwegian grandmother, Margit.
Troy was born to Caroline and John on December 6, 1960, in Calgary, AB. For grades 1 through 9 he attended Colonel Walker School, then Western Canada High School, and then ventured to the University of Calgary, Faculty of Management, where Troy graduated in 1982.
He began working immediately for Nova. He worked there for four and a half years. Through his accounting, Troy discovered the Federal Government owed Nova twelve million dollars. Then, he moved to one of Nova’s departments. When he left Nova, seven people took over the duties he had authority over.
Leaving Nova, Troy entered the MBA program at Arizona State University, in Tempe, AZ. He completed this program in one and a half years with the highest marks. He was honoured with a dinner and entry into Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. The CIA wanted him, McDonnell Douglas wanted him, but Troy was a Canadian.
Friendship was very important to Troy. He has friends from all over, from Arizona and across Canada. He was very involved in a variety of sports, playing them all very well. Troy excelled as a water skier and at windsurfing.
Troy started his company Illium in Calgary, AB, with an office on 8th Avenue. As members of his family died, his help was greatly needed, eventually leaving himself only with his mother, Caroline. Troy looked after each member of his family – his uncle Leif, grandfather Martin, and his grandmother Margit.
Troy began feeling ill this summer and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit of Rockyview General Hospital. Subsequent operations led to the discovery of cancer and then to his death on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Prior to his passing, Troy had begun to work on a project involving energy and the environment.
Caroline would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and specialists of Rockyview General Hospital for their care of Troy. Their compassion, skill, and exceptional love for their patients were exhibited each and every day. Thank you.
A scholarship in Troy’s memory will be set up in the future.
