Obituary of Bill Gibson
January 18, 1936 - Glasgow, Scotland
September 28, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
William “Bill” Gibson, beloved husband of Catherine Gibson (nee Kerr), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
Bill was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on January 18, 1936. He eventually made his way across the ocean, immigrating to Canada in 1975. He settled in Calgary, AB, where he built a life for his family.
Bill proudly served his country in the British Army for two years and was stationed in Cyprus. After he arrived in Canada, he worked as a millwright and eventually retired from a long career at the Calgary Airport Authority. Bill was also a proud union activist who tirelessly advocated for better working conditions for his coworkers.
In 1960, Bill married the love of his life, Catherine, with whom he shared many cherished years. Together, they created a loving home and raised their family.
A passionate golfer, Bill spent many days on the course, even marshalling at Winter Green & Heritage Pointe after retiring, just to be around it. He loved going to Celtic games with his late brother, Sammy. He also delighted in watching his grandchildren play hockey, never missing a chance to cheer them on and spoil them with candy from the dollar store. He never turned down the opportunity to play Santa Claus.
Besides his loving wife, Bill is survived by his daughter Loraine, sons, Paul (Shelly), Stuart (Diane), and Will (Claudia); his grandchildren, Kyle, Mitch, Cole, Nicole, Eric, Chris, Matteo, Derek, and Cory; and great-grandchildren, Sophia and Sarah.
Bill is also lovingly remembered by his sister Irene (Frank) Learmonth of East Kilbride, brother-in-law Billy Kerr of Royston Hill, Glasgow, many nieces and nephews in Scotland, and close friends.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Peggy; his sister Mary (Alex) Allison, his brother Sam (Betty) Gibson, sister-in-law Jean (Johnny) Boyle, brothers-in-law, Teddy (Betty) Kerr and Andrew (Ella) Kerr; his niece Margaret Kerr, and his great-nephew David Johnston.
The family will be holding a Memorial for Bill at a later date.
