Obituary of Raymond Bugry

March 23, 1935 – Punnichy, Saskatchewan

October 6, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Raymond Bugry on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the age of 89. Ray was a devoted and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. His generous, playful, and loving nature touched many lives. Ray was a gentleman, mentor, and friend to many.

Ray was born in rural Saskatchewan. His family moved to Kitchener, ON, when he was a young boy. Ray enjoyed swimming and playing basketball growing up in Kitchener. He excelled at both sports.

Ray obtained a Geology degree from the University of Western Ontario, in London, ON. He also met his wife Marlene while he was studying in London. They married in 1961. Ray went on to complete a master’s degree in Geochemistry at McMaster University. His daughter Lisa was born in early 1964, shortly before he finished his studies.

In late 1964, the family moved to Calgary to pursue Ray’s career as a geologist. His daughter Michelle was welcomed into the family in 1966. Ray thrived in his career in the oil and gas industry. He also worked into his “golden years”, consulting part-time on various technical projects from his home office.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, and “sneaking” way too many treats to the family’s pets. He had a great sense of humor and often told a good joke. When his daughters were growing up, Ray took them, along with many of the neighborhood children, swimming every Sunday afternoon. He also frequently took the family skating and fossil hunting in the mountains. He encouraged his daughters and granddaughter to get a good education and “dream big”. He was a constant source of encouragement for his family.

He belonged to Silver Springs Golf and Country Club for over forty years. He made and enjoyed many friendships while golfing and socializing at the Club. Getting together with friends for a drink and a snack was a ritual he routinely enjoyed after a round of golf.

Ray will be missed by all who had the pleasure, and privilege, of knowing him. His quiet presence will be especially missed by his daughter Lisa, who cared for him during his final years. He will also be missed by his daughter Michelle (Marc), granddaughter Kaithlyn, and sisters, Julie, Nel, and Anne. The family sadly lost Marlene in 2021. Ray also lost his sister Lee, and his brothers, William and Steve, prior to his death.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Jiri Slaby, Veronica Strachan, Dr. Yael Shrom, and the Transfusion Clinic nurses (all at the Hematology Department, Peter Lougheed Hospital), Dr. Andrew Crichton, Dr. Khatereh Mojtahedi and June Grundy (Varsity Medical), and the nurses, doctors, and staff at Carewest Sarcee and Intercare Brentwood for their kindness, friendship, and exceptional care of Raymond during his life.

Those we love don’t go away. They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear. May you journey safely to the other side and rest in peace. Please say hi to Mom and feed the cat when you get there!
