Obituary of June Mattheys

June 1, 1938 – South Africa

October 22, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

 

June Mattheys (nee Farrer) of Airdrie, AB, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the age of 86 years.

 

June was born in South Africa on June 1, 1938. She immigrated to Canada from South Africa in 1978.  She lived in Alberta from the time she settled in Canada.

 

June married David Mattheys on September 29, 1956, and they loved each other through 68 years of marriage.

 

June was a dedicated wife and mother who was always present for her family.

 

She was a caring and empathetic volunteer at various hospitals and cared for the elderly for over fourteen years at Bethany Care in Airdrie, AB. Over the years, she was also a dedicated and tireless volunteer with the Airdrie Food Bank. 

 

June accomplished much throughout her life and was especially known for her beautiful handcrafting, knitting, sewing and embroidery. She won numerous competitions and awards for her unique creations. She loved flowers and being outdoors and was an avid gardener. June was also a brilliant and talented pianist. She had a great passion for dogs, and she usually knew the name of the dog before the name of the person.

 

June and David enjoyed travelling the world and had many great adventures together, especially enjoying their winters in Texas. June’s most memorable vacation was when She and David travelled throughout Chile in 2013. She was also fluent in Spanish, English and Afrikaans.

 

She will be most remembered for her giving spirit, her kind heart and her love for dogs and family. June was also a woman of steadfast faith and devotion, always giving of her time and talents.

 

Besides her loving husband, David, June is survived by her son, Tony Mattheys of Calgary, AB; her three daughters, Glenda Mattheys of Leduc County, AB, Anne Mattheys of Penticton, BC, and Jenny Proctor of Blackfalds, AB. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Samantha-Lynne, Jenni-Leila, Britany, Alexandria, Jonathan, Sophie, Dylan and Benjamin; and seven great-grandchildren, Markus, Jayce, Kierra, Rafaela, Tori, Aiden and Remi.

 

June was predeceased by her parents, William and Lilian Farrer, her brother, Herbert Farrer and her granddaughter, Emily.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive) on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.
