Obituary of Girlie Ruelo Mercado

October 26, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Girlie Ruelo Mercado, the beloved wife of Henry Ramos Mercado, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the age of 62 years; the third youngest of ten children.

Girlie was born in Sibalom, Antique, Philippines on August 2, 1962.

She graduated from Manila Central University with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Girlie immigrated to Calgary in 2005.

She was a member of the Gladys Seventh-day Adventist Church, volunteered with the same church as the Sabbath School superintendent head, Health Ministries Assistant, and Social Committee assistant for four years.

Girlie was passionate about culturing plants, with orchids and mushrooms being the most successful. She enjoyed talking to these plants daily, encouraging them to grow and bear flowers. She loved watching movies, playing with our dog Benjie, cooking meals for the family, and travelling with family and friends.

Besides her loving husband Henry, Girlie is survived by her daughter Maggie del Socorro, sisters, Aida Yalung, Lolie Cargullo, and Sally del Socorro; brothers, Jaime del Socorro and Jose del Socorro; grandson Joshua Abe Orcajada (whom she loved the most), sisters-in-law, Jean del Socorro, Adelina Ruelo, and Grace del Socorro; brothers-in-law, Antonio Yalung and Rudy Albeza; ten nephews, five nieces, and several great-nephews and nieces.

Girlie was predeceased by her parents, Fortunata Ruelo and Jose del Socorro; brothers, Jose del Socorro Jr, Renato Ruelo, and Jesus del Socorro; sister Violeta Albeza, and father-in-law Liberato Mercado.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 8, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mrs. Mercado’s service streamed live (see link below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
