October 30, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Hope Popadynetz, beloved wife of Matthew Popadynetz, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the age of 90 years.
Born on May 19, 1934, in Wynyard, SK, Hope grew up in a large, loving family with six sisters and three brothers. Family was her greatest joy. In 1953, Hope married Matthew Popadynetz. Hope’s first job was at a café in a local pool hall, where she quickly became known for her skill in crafting the best, thickest milkshakes around. In 1969, she and Matthew moved to Calgary, AB.
She worked as head cashier for Loblaws and Co-op for 32 years. Hope owned and operated her catering business with her family and supplied individual perogies and cabbage roll orders to her family, friends, and community.
Hope enjoyed cooking, gardening, baking, and country and western music, with George Jones being her favorite.
Some of Hope's most cherished vacations included trips to Hawaii and Florida with her sister Mary and brother-in-law Joe, a memorable visit to family in England, and going to Nashville with her daughter. She loved travelling to Las Vegas with her grandson Robert, visiting Wynyard to revive the family garden, and spending time in Summerland with her beloved grandchildren.
Hope is survived by her three sisters, Rosemarie, Jean, and Joni; two sons, John and daughter-in-law Paula of Kamloops, BC, and Loney and former daughter-in-law Kasey of Calgary, AB; and daughter Elaine and son-in-law Ray of Calgary, AB. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Erin, Sara, Ashley, Robert, Dale, Madison, Kaitlyn, and Matthew; her great-grandchild, Akira, daughter of Dale and Anna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Hope was predeceased by her spouse Matthew, son Robert, parents, John and Anna Hayko; brothers, Steve, Raymond, and Merv; and sisters, Mary, Vicky, and Carol.
As per Hope’s wishes, no formal services will be held. A Celebration of Hope’s Life will be announced at a later date.
