Elmer “Al” Berger of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully, at the Foothills Medical Centre on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the age of 76 years. His family was blessed to have a long loving vigil with him before his passing.
Elmer is survived by his four sons, Jason Berger (Monique Poirier), Jesse Berger (Kathy Harris), Evan Berger (Karoline Gora), and Kaden Patz. Jason, Jesse, and Evan are the sons of Lucinda Eby and Kaden is the son of Karen Patz, who sadly predeceased him. Al was a devoted grandfather and is also survived by his cherished grandsons, Mathieu and Christian Berger; and adored granddaughter Drusilla Berger. He is also survived by his sister Colleen Berger of Saskatoon, and he leaves behind loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was predeceased by his loving mother Grace Gordon, sister Anita Schenn, sister Brenda Harris, and brother Errol Berger, all of Saskatchewan.
Elmer was a pioneer in Calgary’s sign industry, founding Sign Graphics Ltd. in 1979. The company remains fully operational and is now led by his son Evan. Elmer—or “Al,” as some knew him—had a special tenderness for animals, a deep appreciation for nature, a steady hand, and a fierce competitive spirit, especially in sports.
Beyond being a father, he was also his sons’ best friend. He will be dearly missed for years to come. Elmer received his final sacrament, and in accordance with his wishes, the family will hold a private service.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Al’s family here.
