Margaret Carleton

Obituary of Margaret Joyce Carleton

December 6, 1952 – Calgary, Alberta

December 21, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that we announce that Margaret Carleton, beloved wife of Jack (John) Carleton of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at the age of 72 years. She was an individual of great style, grace, and dignity, and was well-liked and respected by those who knew her.

Margaret was born in Calgary, AB, on December 6, 1952.  She lived most of her life in Calgary, apart from a year spent in Ottawa, ON, as a child and time spent in Edmonton, AB, while her husband attended law school. For her, there could be no home other than Calgary.

Margaret attended James Fowler High School and then graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Education and an Early Childhood Services (ECS) Diploma in 1975.

Having met Jack in high school and dated him during university, Margaret married Jack in 1976.

Margaret loved teaching and was completely committed to the young children in her charge. With her ECS background, she developed a highly successful program for kindergarten children with learning challenges and, particularly, speech issues. Regrettably, a serious vehicle accident and other circumstances with long-term consequences significantly shortened her career, to her great disappointment.

Margaret was a skilled, self-taught seamstress and novice painter until the vehicle accident severely limited her ability to pursue these interests.  Fortunately, she was able to continue one of her greatest pleasures and happy challenges, playing bridge with long-time friends and local bridge groups.

Margaret had a passionate and insatiable thirst for travel. She was always looking for lesser-known destinations, and over the course of 30 years, she circled the globe several times in pursuit of the novel and exotic.

Margaret was deeply loved by Jack and by her family, and she will be greatly missed.

Besides her loving husband, Jack, Margaret is survived by her son, Robert Carleton, and her daughter-in-law Natalie Carleton (nee Halliwell), and their five-year-old son, and her grandson, Bodhi. She is also survived by her daughter, Katherine Carleton, her son-in-law, Andrew Wort, their two-year-old daughter, and her granddaughter, Olivia, all of whom reside in Calgary.

Margaret is also survived by her one sister, Lorraine Sinclair, and her four brothers, Duncan Sinclair, Grant Sinclair (Lynn), Bruce Sinclair, and Malcolm Sinclair; along with nieces and nephews, Heather Park (Dan), Courtney Sinclair, Sara Behts (Greyer), Ryan Sinclair, and Jerrod Sinclair; all of whom reside in Calgary.

Margaret was predeceased by her father, Allan Sinclair, her mother, Earlene Sinclair, her infant brother, John Francis Sinclair, and her sister-in-law, Kevyn Sinclair.

Funeral Services will be held at the Anglican Parish of Christ Church (3602 - 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
