Obituary of Arnold Seigfreid Knopp
September 6, 1929 – Edmonton, Alberta
November 21, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce Arnold Knopp, beloved father, and husband of the late Alys Knopp, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the age of 95 years.
Arnold was born in Edmonton, AB, on September 6, 1929. Having spent his early years on the family homestead in Ellerslie, near Edmonton, the family subsequently moved to the Hay Lakes area in 1940 to establish their new family farm. Tragically, the family lost their brother Wilfred in 1948 to a farming accident, and their mother Ida (Lede) Knopp to tuberculosis the following year in March of 1949 at the early age of 46.
After living in Edmonton, and a short time in Vancouver, Arnold moved to Calgary where he married Alys (Rae) in 1969 and had two sons, David and Gary. He spent his work life trucking in the oil and gas industry with his company A.S. Knopp Trucking, Ltd. hauling for Forester’s Transport and Gibson Petroleum until his retirement in 1994.
He will be remembered for his passion for working on anything mechanical and was known by family and friends as the person who could fix anything. He spent his retirement years tinkering on cars and fixing anything he could get his hands on. Never one to sit still, he always needed a project to keep him busy, remaining active until close to his 95th Birthday.
Arnold is survived by his two sons, David Knopp (Crystal Stone) and Gary Knopp; grandchildren, Rylie, Cierra, Cailen, and Conor, all of Calgary; and his brother Edward Knopp (Doreen), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Arnold was predeceased by his sister Rosalie Grams (2012), brothers, Wilfred (1948) and Reinhold (2017); and stepsister Carol Brandon (2010).
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 30, 2024, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Gathering to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Arnold’s family here.
