Condolences
I worked at Amica for five years and was truly inspired by Margo. She was such a go getter and I loved her common sense - no nonsense attitude toward life. Her smile lit up the room and I will not forget the impact she had on my life. I remember her in the floor stretch class telling me that she was not getting an adequate hamstring stretch. I have never seen a person of that age with that kind of flexibility in her body. She worked hard to maintain her fitness as she aged and was such a treasure to chat with. My deepest sympathy to all who loved her - both family and friends. RIP Margo. You will be missed.
Thank you, Lynn, for your kind words. Mom loved your classes and activities and really missed you when you moved from Calgary. All the best to you and your family.
To Marg Oliver's family,
Thank you for sharing your lovely obituary of your Mom's amazing life. I was privileged to know Marg intermittently over the years. Not long after taking your Dad's Geology 101 course at U of C, I met and married a geology grad student, Don Harris, who had come from the east to continue studies at U of C. We were married in 1964 and had invited the Olivers to our wedding. During the following year I was doing my teaching practicum in a grade 5 class at Banff Trail School and Jane Oliver was in this class, giving me a chance to connect with Marg in a different environment. But the most impactful encounters with Marg took place at the North Family YMCA where we took fitness and swimming classes together. Finally we reached the highest level we achieved in swimming, the lifeguarding class. Marg was my partner for mouth to mouth resuscitation. At that time there were no mouth guards for sanitation purposes and I ended up with a chipped front tooth, a memorable souvenir of our shared experience! Although I never participated in Marg's hiking group, I hiked with my own Tuesday hiking group (The Senioritas) , and would sometimes meet Marg's group.. They informed me that when Marg retired from their group, she filed many photos and trip reports of their hikes over the years, at the Whyte Museum. Someday I plan to visit there and see her documents. Sadly, after 58 years of marriage, Don passed away last winter, but I bet he's meeting up with your Mom and Dad!
With sincere condolences and very best wishes for carrying on without your beautiful matriarch,
Marlene Harris
Thank you, Marlene, for sharing these memories and the connections. Condolences to you on the passing of Don.
I only met Mrs Oliver once, at a Tom Oliver lecture that I helped organize well over 16 years ago. She was gracious, beautiful and kind. I’ve spent the past 18 years documenting the history of the department of Geology (renamed Geology and Geophysics, and then renamed Geoscience, and now called Earth, Energy and Environmental) and only kind words have ever been said about both Dr Oliver and Mrs Oliver. My most sincere condolences to the family.
Thank you, Laura, for sharing these memories.
Our condolences Mark and family for your loss. She sounded like a very adventurous lady!
-Katrina and Chris
Thank you Katrina and Chris
We have fond memories of Marg and Tom in our formative years with the Geology Dept at the University of Calgary and later events, including as guests at our 1970 wedding reception. While we did often see them in later decades they were still in our thoughts as we looked back on our own family history. We are thankful for having known both of them and wish their family all the best.
Wayne & Linda Shepheard
Thank you Wayne and Linda. I can remember being at your cottage at the Summer Village at Ghost Reservoir for a BBQ. If I remember correctly, you had a little motorized bike called a Tote Goat? That was all a long time ago!
