Obituary of Francis Douglas Gibbs
December 9, 1942 – Regina, Saskatchewan
November 24, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Francis Douglas Gibbs, affectionately known as Doug, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 81 years. Doug was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, whose warmth and humor touched the lives of all who knew him.
Originally from Lumsden, SK, and later Regina, SK, Doug's passion for skiing took him to Banff, AB, when he was 18. This began his journey in the ski and sports retail industry in the early 1960s at Sunshine Village, where he honed his skills in the ski repair shop. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-own the Abominable Ski Shop until the early 1980s, when he relocated his family to beautiful Victoria, BC.
Over the years, Doug embraced various ventures including the restaurant business, golf cart sales, dry cleaning, and ultimately, home repair and renovations. His diverse career reflected his relentless drive and adaptability.
A passionate sports fan, Doug cheered for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays, and of course the Saskatchewan Roughriders. However, his greatest enthusiasm was reserved for his grandchildren. He was their biggest supporter, attending countless games and activities, and always encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
Doug’s journey towards personal growth and sobriety over the last 25 years allowed him to be an active and positive presence in their lives. His perseverance in addressing his internal struggles was a testament to his strength and commitment to family.
Doug's joy was found in helping others, spending time with friends, and sharing laughter, no matter the circumstances. Doug took immense pride in his children and grandchildren. He cherished his relationship with Jennifer and was grateful for their enduring friendship.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Gibbs and Gillian (James) Gray; his son David (Vanessa) Gibbs, and his grandchildren, Emileigh, Jamie, Drayden, Harrison, and Gavin. He also leaves behind his dear nieces, Natasha (John) and Jennifer (Bo); and nephew Andrew (Jennifer). Doug was predeceased by his beloved sister Patricia, his brother-in-law Nestor Ficzycz, and his mother Dorothy Forbes.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Chinook Care Centre, Dr. Evans, and Dr. Larsen for their compassionate care.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Doug's life and legacy.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alano Club, 450 Whistler St. Duncan, BC. V9L 3P6, Phone: (250) 748-0724, www.cowichanvalleyalanoclub.com.
In the words of the Serenity Prayer, “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Doug will be deeply missed, but his spirit and laughter will forever resonate in our hearts.
