Obituary of Herbert Hung Nam Yip 葉鴻南

Herbert Yip (葉鴻南), beloved husband of Jan Pui Chun Yip (林培珍), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the age of 85 years.

Herbert’s journey took him across the globe, beginning with his emigration from Indonesia to China in 1960. In 1979, he moved to Hong Kong before immigrating to Winnipeg, MB, in 1994, and ultimately settling in Calgary, AB, in 1997. In 1963, Herbert married Jan Pui Chun Lam.

Herbert graduated with a university degree in English and became an English teacher with a stellar reputation and high demand in China. He was particularly proud of his career as a popular and well-regarded English teacher. He taught in Guangxi in 1961 and was recruited in 1963 to teach at Xiamen No.1 High School, a well-known middle school in Fujian, China. Herbert had taught and established countless students and stayed in contact with many of them throughout his life. Herbert enjoyed learning English. He had many notes for jotting down new vocabulary words he discovered each day.

Besides his loving wife Jan Pui Chun Yip (林培珍), Herbert is survived by his two sons and two daughters-in-law, Sam (葉立群) and Rebecca (黃艷紅) of Singapore, and Raymond (葉立明) and Kate (謝潔珍) of Calgary; four grandchildren, Eveline (葉海瑜) and Ralph (葉宗恩) of Singapore, and Ryan (葉懐恩) and Philia (葉曉恩) of Calgary; grandson-in-law Dominic Tan of Singapore, and great-grandson Frederick Tan (陳宇杰) of Singapore.

Herbert is also survived by his three brothers and their family in Hong Kong; two sisters and their family in Hong Kong; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
