Chris and I were classmates at the Senior School in Soest Germany from 1959 to 1962. But more important we were hitch-hiking companions on several trips through northern Europe during school holidays (and occasionally when se should have been in school). Hollland, Bavaria, Austria, Denmark and so on.
He was a great guy to travel with, always upbeat, even when we'd been standing for hours on the autobahn hoping for a lift.
I remember a snowball fight with a bunch of Japanese students on the ramparts of King Ludwig's castle at Neuschwanstein, and a British band in a seedy dive in Hamburg in 1961 that we later thought might have been the Beatles.
We later served in the army at the same time (me for only a few years), but unfortunately never in the same place.
We last met at the Soest reunion a few years back. I wish I'd seen him more.
