I have the privilege of growing up with Nick in the community. Whether it was hockey, golf, or just time spent together, I always held such fond memories of my time with him. Though we lost touch as we entered into our adult years, most recently I found it special to see our worlds cross paths again with our kids ending up as friends in class together.

Jo-Ann, Jim, Sarah, Matthew and family, we are truly heartbroken for you all. Nicolas’s passing is such a tragic loss for everyone who knew him.

Although we didn’t have the privilege of knowing him as a young adult and father, we have fond memories of Nicholas at the Lake Bonavista Community Centre where our sons often played hockey together in their primary and secondary school years, enjoying the camaraderie that team sports often bring to young people. Nicholas was always a great role model for his teammates either through his hard work on the ice or his fun loving, but respectful, attitude in the dressing room. We remember his bright smile and somewhat mischievous demeanor.

We wanted to share a memory that perfectly reflects Nicholas’s kind and generous soul. Christmas of 2020 was a challenging time for all of us, but it was also a moment when his warmth and thoughtfulness shone brightly. Melissa, our daughter, had made Christmas sugar cookies for the kids to paint, and we gave some to Nicholas and Sarah for Warner and Griffin. To our surprise, despite the challenges of Covid and social distancing, Nicholas, Sarah, and the kids arrived at our house to thank us for the cookies and wish us a Merry Christmas.

This act of kindness touched our hearts deeply, especially as we were still grieving the loss of our own son. Nicholas’s gesture reminded us of the power of generosity and human connection, even in the hardest of times.

We will always treasure this memory as a beautiful reflection of his spirit. Please take comfort in knowing how much he meant to those around him.
