Obituary of Clifford Stanley Baker

March 18, 1937 – Humbermouth, Newfoundland

November 30, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Clifford Baker of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

Clifford was born on March 18, 1937, in Humbermouth, Newfoundland. He married the love of his life, Shirley Critchley, in 1959. Later they moved to Calgary, AB, in 1963 with their two daughters, Cynthia and Juanita, where they lived for sixty years in the same house. Shirley was pregnant with her third child and gave birth to Sherry in September of that same year.

He was a well-educated man who graduated from high school in Cormack, NL, completed his first-year education course at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL, and then went on to work at Alberta National Drugs in Calgary. Clifford was also a teacher and a principal in Newfoundland. He then went to university in Calgary to become a CGA (Certified General Accountant). He worked as a controller and auditor for several oil companies, as he would always talk about having an auditor’s mind. Clifford loved photography, old Western movies, Hank Williams and Jim Reeves songs, old country songs, and Chinese or Vietnamese food. Above all, his main love was his wife Shirley and his family.

He took pride in finding just the right job, and after going through a few, he found it. He told us that he found one that he knew would give him enough income so Mom could stay home or work, whichever she wanted. He just wanted to make sure he could take care of the love of his life—the perfect couple.

They loved to travel together, and although Clifford was funny yet a quiet man, he liked to do whatever Shirley wanted to do. He kept busy with her entertainment; he really just lived for Shirley. Humor was his thing; Clifford had a good time laughing with people, making jokes, and was truly the kindest man you could know.

Clifford lived a greatly loved life, and will be missed by so many, and will always be remembered and loved.

Clifford is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia, Juanita (Bob), and Sherry; five grandchildren, Cory, Kirk, Erin (Dallas), Sophie, and Sadie; and five great-grandchildren, Jesse, Lucian, Hudson, Aria, and Jade.

He is also survived by his siblings, Alma, Jack’s wife Edith, Alice (Cladio), Roy, David (Rose), Don (Pat), Annie (John), and Viola; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Clifford was predeceased by his wife Shirley, mother Pearl (nee Button), father George Baker, and siblings, Maxwell, Mildred, Ronald, and Jack.
