Obituary of Duncan Robert Bird

April 3, 1932 - December 5, 2024

With gratitude for a well-lived life, we announce the peaceful passing of Duncan Robert Bird on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the age of 92 years. Duncan lived a remarkable life as a skilled chemical engineer, devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather.

Duncan was born and spent his formative years in Grande Prairie, AB, with his parents and his brother Mac. He attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering, and he was a proud member of the Delta Upsilon (DU) Fraternity. Upon graduation, he began a career in the oil business which spanned decades, marked by dedication, innovation, and the respect of his peers.

In 1953, at a university dance, Duncan met a student nurse, Barbara Gene Wilcocks, who became the love of his life. Two years later, in 1955, they married and began a life filled with love, adventure, and shared purpose. Together, they created a warm and loving home, raising three daughters, Karen (John), Dianne (Richard), and Janis (Gordon). Duncan was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, J.J., Callie (Troy), Taylor, Madison, and Claire, whose accomplishments brought him immense joy. Duncan and Barbara were married for 60 years until her passing in 2015.

Duncan enjoyed a vibrant life beyond his career. He was passionate about golfing, skiing, hiking, traveling, and sharing countless adventures with friends and family. Summers camping at Christina Lake, skiing in Whitefish, Montana, and playing golf at the Glencoe were among his treasured experiences.

Known for his striking red hair and strong opinions, Duncan was never one to shy away from sharing his thoughts. His forthright nature and confidence left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Duncan is survived by his three daughters, five grandchildren, and the memories of a life filled with love, accomplishment, and adventure. Duncan was predeceased by his wife Barbara, brother Mac (Josephine), as well as his parents, Jack and Kathleen Bird.
