Obituary of Margaret Peggy Marie DUFFY
September 13, 1930 – St. John’s, Newfoundland
July 7, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Peggy beloved wife of the late Bernard Duffy of Calgary, AB, passed away on July 7, 2014 at the age of 83 years.
Peggy was born the tenth of 12 children to the late Terence and Ida Cooper in St-John’s Newfoundland on September 13, 1930. At an early age, she showed her resilience when her father passed away when she was 9 years old on the eve of WWII. Her mother would keep her family together through these difficult years. Peggy went on to obtain her RN through the St Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St-John’s. Upon completion, her adventurous spirit brought her to Montreal where she met and married Bernie and raised her four children before Bernie passed away suddenly after only 24 years of marriage. With Colleen, Brian and Tim all in university and Janet only 10 years old, Peggy showed her determination through her hard work and faith in the Lord. After retiring from the Lakeshore General Hospital, she moved to be closer to her family in Oakville, Ontario and wore the highways out with her driving all over to be with her grandchildren in Gatineau, Kingston, Milton and Newmarket. She also travelled the world and made life long friends such as Eve Charette. For the last 11 years, she lived in Calgary being cared for by Janet and her family. She was extremely proud of her 12 grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to talk about them!
Peggy is survived by her children, Colleen (David) Kay, Brian (Sylvie) Duffy, Tim (Lisa) Duffy and Janet (Paul) Lymer; her grandchildren, Meaghan (Darryl), Fiona (Carl), Douglas (Samantha), Karine, Sean, Elyse (Nicholas), Chantal (Phil), Jessica, Katelyn and Erin (Chris), Madison and Austin, three great-grandchildren Ava, Grace and Evan; 35 nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Kathleen Cooper of Saskatoon, SK and Brenda Cooper of Cornerbrook, NL. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard, her parents and her siblings, Mary, Cecil, Agnes, Kay, Kevin, Ted, Jim, Arthur, Tess, Stan and Francis.
The family are eternally grateful to mom’s caring and dedicated family physician, Dr. Audrey Achtymichuk, the caring and loving staff at Bow View Manor and in her final days to the nurses and doctors on unit 36 at the Foothills.
