Obituary of Freda Whittaker

Freda Whittaker (nee Pearson) passed away peacefully with family by her side in Calgary, AB, on December 10, 2024, at the age of 94 years.

Freda is lovingly remembered by her son Paul (Heather) of Edmonton, AB, daughter Meryl (Walter) of Calgary, AB, and her grandchildren, Robert, Ally, Tess, Teagan, Morgan, and Hannah. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Roy, and her youngest son Philip.

Born in Manchester, UK, in 1930, Freda saw and experienced much in life. As a child, she was evacuated to the countryside, like many English children, as bombs fell on her neighbourhood during WWII. In 1954 she married Roy and together raised three children.

Freda and Roy immigrated to Canada in 1965, taking the leap of faith that so many generations of immigrants have undertaken to provide a better future for themselves and their children. They first lived in Oakville, ON, and then Barrie, ON, before moving to Alberta in 1978. They initially settled in Grande Prairie and later in Sherwood Park, where they retired. They spent treasured summers at their cabin on Muriel Lake.

Freda was a proud and active Beta Sigma Phi sorority member in both Grande Prairie and Sherwood Park. She also volunteered for over a decade at the Strathcona Care Centre.

With the passage of time, Freda and Roy moved into Summerwood Village in Sherwood Park. Afterward, Freda relocated to Silverado Creek Seniors' Community in Calgary, where she was living when she passed away at the South Calgary Health Campus. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at all three facilities for their kindness and compassion.

Mom and Dad always had dogs, which brought great joy to their lives, and were supporters of the Humane Society.
