Obituary of Baldur Johannson
January 5, 1935 – Geysir, Manitoba
December 10, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Baldur Johannson, who departed peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the age of 89 years. A man of great determination and unwavering love, Baldur lived a long and fulfilling life, leaving a legacy of kindness, passion, and resilience.
Baldur was born on the family farm in the Icelandic settlement of Geysir, MB. It is here where he learned the value of hard work. Baldur started his career as a teacher, teaching grades one to eight in a one-room schoolhouse. After only a few years of teaching, he found his true passion in the automotive industry. His career as a dealer principal with both General Motors and the Ford Motor Company spanned over four decades and was a testament to his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. He was known for his hard work, keen business sense, and unwavering commitment to employees and customers.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Baldur had a zest for life and an ability to connect with people. Each morning, he looked forward to playing a game of "bush" with his friends, where the stakes—who would pay for coffee—were always lighthearted yet fiercely competitive. Ever the card enthusiast, he found particular delight in the game of Blackjack, where his sharp mind and love of strategy were very much evident. Never one to turn down a trip to Las Vegas or Laughlin, Nevada, he always enjoyed the camaraderie with friends. These adventures were always filled with laughter and memories cherished by all who joined him.
As an avid curler in his younger years, Baldur always held the sport close to his heart, never missing the excitement of The Brier or the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. During baseball season, Sunday afternoons were reserved for Major League Baseball, where he cheered on his favourite teams!
Above all else, Baldur cherished his family. He was a loving father and an adoring grandfather. He was so very proud of his children’s accomplishments and never missed an opportunity to let them know. His grandchildren were his greatest treasures. Watching his grandchildren excel in their individual passions brought him immense pride and joy. Each achievement was a testament to the values of perseverance and the “never give up attitude” he instilled in his family.
Though life presented its fair share of trials and tribulations, Baldur faced them with courage and determination, always striving to do what he thought was best. His strength and determination left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed by his constant companion Lynne, his loving children, Jason Johannson and Arica (Daron) Jensen; and his cherished grandchildren, Cole, Spencer, Carter, and Skylar. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends and colleagues who will remember his warmth, humour, and generosity.
He was predeceased by his wife Leone Johannson, son Sheldon Johannson, parents, Gunnlaugur and Lillian Johannson; brothers, Harold and Irvin; and sisters, Rosalind Sugden and Frances Knippelberg.
Baldur will be privately remembered by his family at this time.
A Celebration of Baldur's Life will be held at a later date.
Rest in peace, Baldur. Your spirit will forever ‘drive’ us forward.
