Obituary of Ernie Labelle

It is with great sadness that the Labelle/Bearspaw family announce the unexpected passing of our patriarch, Ernie Labelle, on Friday, December 20, 2024, at the age of 79 years.

 

Ernie received his education at Mînî Thnî school, a residential school survivor. He accomplished a lot throughout his 79 years of life. He was an active sportsman, participating in rodeo in boys steer riding, calf roping, and steer wrestling. He played hockey with the Morley Tomahawks, he coached as well, back then they were called the Morley Capitals and Jr. Tomahawks where his sons and nephews were players. Ernie also participated in track and field, and football.

 

He was employed in numerous departments with the Stoney Nation; a transportation driver for Morley school, public works, and he retired as a transportation driver for Stoney Health. He was an employee with the construction of Trans Canada highway, and he worked as a ranch hand for the Copithorne family during the summer season. He served a term as a Bearspaw councillor, and within his term, he travelled to New Zealand in 1977. He worked as a liaison seismic employee with Taw Wow oil and gas company. He spent the last years of his retirement enjoying his passions: watching NHL Hockey (his favorite team was the Calgary Flames), rodeo and CFL.

 

Ernie leaves behind his daughters, Carrie, Sindy, Mandy (Garrett), Delphine, Rosie, Tiona, Kimberley, Lorenda, and Stacy (Myron); his sons, Dustin, Todd (Chris), Gilmore, Marvin, Leo (Ursula), Ken (Shelly), Larry, Lonnie, and Monty; one sister, Carolyn L; sisters-in-law, Brenda, Charlene (Clarence), Geraldine (John) B, Sheila Jacobs, Julia Johnson, Madeline Littlechild, Sharlene Robbins, Darlene Hunter, Loriane, and Bernadine (Wyatt) P.; grandchildren, Carla (Darryl), Joey, Troy, Alexis HF, Chelsea (Jay), Skylee (Taylissa), Mikka (Eric), Kia-Lani, Danica (Taylor), Brandis (Isaiah), Ocean, Braden, Bailey, Brandon, Moses, Elijah, and numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

 

He traditionally adopted as his own: Linda H, Florene (Gilbert) Francis, Sandra B, Dixie (Tater) H, Marcy (Dave) B, Ronalda T, Tammy D, Michelle (Brent), Danielle, Desiree, Katrina and Natasha L, Martin Rider, Bruce Stewart, Myron (Diane) B, Jeremy, Jody (Darnel), Lyle L, Sky (Kendall) Hr, Riel R, Thomas B; cousins Alvin Y, Bruce L, Glen S, Claude L, Terry P, Keith L, Roderick P, and Roderick E, Garnet (Miranda), Winnie B, Myra L, Muriel L, Bonita Ann (Brian) L, Laura (Louis) HF, Ann (Tom) Y, Germaine L, LeeAnn (Perry) G, Pam (Keon) H, Diane E, Belinda E, Kathleen (Henry) H, Violet B, Alvina C, and Joyleen (Hank) E, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended relatives from Eden Valley, Maskwacis, Tsuut’ina, Saskatchewan, BC, and the United States.

 

Ernie was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Winnie Bearspaw (2021), grandparents, Alex and Jesse Labelle, and Moses and Mary Jane Chiniquay; parents, Louie and Katie Labelle; children, Cheryl and Andrew; granddaughter, Jasmine B; siblings, Ken (Beverly) Daniels, Ronald (Reba) Baptiste, Evelyn (John), Rena (Pierce), Manual, Clifford, Pauline, and Harvey; in-laws, Roger and Gladys Bearspaw; sisters-in-law, Joyce M, Gwen, Evelyna, Lily, Ralphine, and Karen; brothers-in-law, Lloyd, Marty, Herbert, Sidney, Peter P, and Morley W.

 

Wake Services will be held at the residence the late Ernie Labelle (Mînî Thnî, AB) on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

 

Funeral Services will be held at the Bearspaw Youth Centre (Mînî Thnî, AB) on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 10:00 a.m.  Graveside Service to follow at Bearspaw Cemetery (Mînî Thnî, AB).

 

In living memory of Ernie Labelle, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
