Obituary of Watson Allen Sabean

September 29, 1935 – Middleton, Nova Scotia

January 11, 2025 – Calgary, Alberta

Watson Sabean, beloved husband of Doreen Mae (nee Sabean), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the age of 89 years.

Watson was born in Middleton, NS, on September 29, 1935. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1950 at the age of fifteen and was stationed in Aldershot, NS, Canada. He was stationed for three years in Germany, as well as serving a peacekeeping mission in Cyprus. He was stationed at CFB Gagetown (5th Canadian Division Support Base) in New Brunswick, and CFB Currie in Calgary, AB. He was a member of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment), as well as the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry with the Canadian Armed Forces for 22 years.

Watson left the military with an honourable discharge due to medical reasons while stationed in Calgary. He embarked on a new career with the Calgary Board of Education as a custodian and caretaker, a position he held for twenty-plus years.

Watson married Doreen in 1968, with their most memorable vacation being a six-week-long trip throughout Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. Watson had a passion for fishing, camping, travelling, and sightseeing.

Watson’s favourite saying was, “Cupboards are not butt holes; they don’t close themselves.” Another favourite before his hearing problems began was, “Turn that darn TV down!” He will be most remembered for his odd sense of humour and his seafood diet which he said meant, “eat all you see.”

Besides his loving wife, Watson is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Cashia of Calgary, AB, and Sharon (Barry) Robinson of Vermilion, AB; his son, Bud (Cheryl) Sabean of Maple Creek, SK; and two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Watson was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Theresa Sabean, sister Vera Bonnell, and an infant brother.
