Obituary of Raffaele Corvino
March 25, 1959 - Stolvizza di Resia, Udine, Italy
January 24, 2025 - Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Surrounded by loving friends and family, Raffaele “Larry” Corvino of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the age of 65 years, after a long, brave battle against stomach cancer.
Despite the pain throughout the last weeks of his life, Larry still spent hours every day encouraging and visiting with his loved ones. The wry sense of humour that he displayed throughout was a blessing that continuously lifted their spirits, and the courage with which he faced the end of his time on Earth is an admirable example to them all.
Larry was born in Stolvizza di Resia, Udine, Italy, on March 25, 1959, the eldest of four children. He spent his early childhood there before immigrating to Vancouver, BC, Canada, with his parents and siblings at the age of ten.
In May 1979, Larry enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Private in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Regiment, where he would serve with distinction for the next fourteen years.
Larry and Kathie were married in December 1986 and settled in Calgary, AB. They have two sons together, Andrew (born 1988) and Lindsey William (born 1990).
Larry served alongside his regiment overseas, completing tours of duty as a UN Peacekeeper in Cyprus and the Balkans and earning a promotion to Warrant Officer, before accepting an honourable discharge from the Armed Forces in August 1993 and returning home to his wife and children.
In 1995, he joined the Calgary Parking Authority to work as a Bylaw Officer. Here he remained a model employee, winning and keeping the respect of his colleagues before retiring in 2021.
Throughout his life, Larry never lost sight of what he loved most. He was an enthusiastic student of history, an eager hobbyist, an admired colleague, a loyal friend, and a devoted son, brother, husband, and father. He enriched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him, and although his presence in their lives will always be sorely missed, the memories of Larry's courage, selflessness, devotion, and humour will live on forever in their hearts.
Predeceased by his mother Assunta and his sister Carmella, Larry is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathryn; his sons, Andrew and Lindsey William; his brothers, John and Tony; and his father Nino.
Larry's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Doctors Murray and Karachiwala, and the staff on Unit 95 of the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre for their capable and compassionate treatment.
As per Larry’s wishes, a private family service will be held.
