Obituary of Harvey Edgar HEDLEY
April 28, 1926 – Minneapolis, Minnesota
June 21, 2014 – High River, AB
Harvey Edgar Hedley of High River, AB, beloved husband of Jean Hedley, died peacefully at the High River Hospital Long-Term Care on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the age of 88.
Harvey grew up on the family farm near Hamiota, MAN., studied social work and education at United College (now the University of Winnipeg), and married Marion Jean (nee Lowry) in 1959. He taught public school in Winnipegosis, Gimli, Roland, Winnipeg, and Peguis First Nation, MAN.; and Black Diamond and Cayley, AB. He specialized in the subjects of social studies and math and took extra interest in supporting children who were at-risk or had learning difficulties. At home he was a loyal and patient father who encouraged his children’s interests in sports, music, and especially their schoolwork. Camping and vacations were highlights of family life and Harvey developed his skills as a house painter and handyman to help run the household. His life was defined by the pursuit of knowledge, his devotion to God, and a desire to promote the common ground between the world’s great religions. As a longtime adherent of the Baha’i Faith, he served four years during his retirement as a volunteer host with the National Baha’i Centre for the Republic of Ireland. He will be remembered by those who knew him, especially his children and grandchildren, for his humble, loving, steady character and his gentle sense of humour.
Besides his loving wife of almost 55 years, Jean, Harvey is survived by his four children David (Leslie), Duncan, Darren (Naghmeh), and Ailsa (Dale), and his grandchildren Cameron, Alison, Sean (Alice), Leila, Vahid, Amelia, Sutherland, Aleta, and Lua. He is also survived by his sisters Wilma (Treloar) and Merle (Tremaine), brothers Raymond and Robert, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved mother Aleta, father Percy, and brothers Norville (Kirk) and Reginald.
Funeral Services will be held at High River United Church (123 Macleod Trail S.W., High River, AB) on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
