Condolences
Barb is the “mother” of day care in Calgary, beginning with a study on the need for day care in 1966 while she was the researcher at the Calgary Social Planning Council. The Study was funded by the City of Calgary, Preventive Social Services Program which as an Alderman, she helped shape during her many years as the Chair of City Council’s Policy Committee on Community Services. The Study and her many years of work led to the creation of day care and out-of- school care in Calgary, and dramatically influenced Alberta governments. She was and remains the preeminent Councillor advocate for social justice.
Thank you Alderman Scott.
Barb Scott. How many times did we talk? dozens? Hundreds? You see I covered Calgary City Hall for CFCN TV as it was called then and Barb Scott was one of the first city officials to give me the time of day..She talked to me because she knew she could reach out to her constituents through the media and because I was an inexperienced pup. I grew to know Scott through her passionate debates in council, her mischievous twinkling eyes and smile and her distinct voice. Listen – you can hear it now. Barb was, one of the “good ones”. Like Sue Higgins-Scott, would tell it like it is…she was a marvellous person who made a difference and it was an honour to work “with” her.
I am sorry to see the passing of such a portion of Calgary’s growing up but proud of the fact that I was instrumental in bringing her to the city in 1965 when I was chairman of the Calgary Social Planning Council. She was brilliant. A fighter for social justice and certainly helped build a social conscience in the province.Through my years as a politician, I sought her opinion many times. I, amongst hundreds of others, will miss her. Good bye
Our condolences to Barb’s family and friends. Twelve years ago, our family moved into the house beside hers in Knobhill-Richmond. It was our first (and only) house and it was a gift to get to know Barb – our first neighbour. Even into her later years, she was an involved community member and we both loved our over the fence conversations, especially on summer mornings. Barb was also one gutsy lady. I often recall the night that Barb arrived on my doorstep, relatively unphased, phone in hand, to ask if she could come in and wait for the police, as she had just walked in on her home being burgled. The decision to finally move from her home was a hard one for Barb and when she did, she asked if we wanted to buy her house, so that she didn’t have to worry about getting it fixed up and staged for sale. Later, when we were going through some things she had left, we found countless numbers of little gems of Barb’s – including her old alderman business cards. Not originally from Calgary, we didn’t realize until late in the day how instrumental Barb had been in the formation of our city — to us, she had always been, first and foremost, Barb from next door. Our family will be thinking about Barb this summer on our first trip to Barb Scott Park.

I was saddened to read that Barb had passed away. I served 9 years on City Council with her and have some fond memories. She served her ward and Calgary very well. Always looking out for the underdog.

Former Alderman Ward 6
My heart felt sadness at the passing of Barb. I knew her through her work with my mom Sue Higgins. I think mom and Barb were two peas in the same pod. Although Bard had much nicer language. When I was at city hall she was always very kind and friendly.
Bard did a lot for this city. Anyone who had the years of service, is a wonderful person. I have fond memories of Barb. Thank you for giving her to this city to help make it a better place. May she rest in peace.
Maureen Higgins
My condolences to Barb’s friends and family. The regular interviews with the two “Alderbroads” were a highlight in a long CBC Radio career. Sue Higgins and Barb Scott would come into the studio and instantly strip away the gravitas that sometimes influenced our coverage of politics. I hope somewhere in the firmament, they found an interviewer who will struggle to get a word in edgewise.
My condolences as well. I worked on her campaign when she first got elected. I was a very young teen and I learned a lot from that experience. My father was her campaign manager. It was amazing to see her career unfold. She was so devoted to all of the citizens of Calgary and I watched her give and give. That being said one of my best memories from my teens was tubing with her and my mum down the Elbow River one glorious summer day!!!! You can imagine what fun that was and her wonderful laugh….she made such a difference, I will always think of her.
Barb Scott was a neighbour of our family. For many years, she was a pillar in the community. she would always make an appearance at events, whether it was a neighbour’s backyard B.B.Q., or visiting some young persons Lemonade stand on the corner.
Rest in Peace Barb. God Bless
Nancy Fletcher
