Condolences
I love all the different facets of Ella–her compassion, gentleness, kindness and brightness well matched by great strength of character and a mischievous sense of humour. I loved hearing all her stories–the famous blueberry stew dinner, memories of how she grew up with but never buckled under her challenges, and how she brought those stories into classrooms so that children (and a young teaching practicum student) could understand and experience the day to day struggles and unexpected blessings of having a disability. She allowed us to imagine beyond our own limitations to empathize with the experience of others. In the days since she has left us I have told many people about the serendipitous way in which we met and what an impression she made on me.
We shall miss you, Ella. Your spirit will always be with us. You treated my family so lovingly, and I thank you for that.
To Lou and Mark and family, we wish you our deep condolences, and hope that you may find the strength, courage and patience and many happy memories of your dear wife and mother to help you through this.
Love,
Marion, Mike and Xoli
Dear Lou, Mark, Deb & Brent, and Tyler & Stevie,
I’m not sure that my Mom will ever let me forget how, when Ella looked after me as a kid, I would try and rearrange the furniture at her house. Not because I was mean, but because there was no way that this lady could not see, because she had this magical ability to see (and hear) everything that occured around her.
I remember her coming to talk to the students at Lord Beaverbrook (the week after ‘Tracheotomy Man”) and talking about her life, what it was really like to be blind, and to truely help us understand how we as a society can help each other.
Unfortunately I’m not able to return to Calgary for the service, but you are all in my thoughts.
Chris
“Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am an thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
And when you wake in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there. I did not die.
