Obituary of Evelyn Merle NIBOGIE

October 17, 1919- Calgary, AB October 24, 2013 – Calgary, AB Evelyn Nibogie passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the age of 94 years. Evelyn was born and raised in the neighborhood of Inglewood in central Calgary. Except for 15 years spent in Red Deer, she lived much of her life in Briar Hill in NW Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband Johnny, her daughter, Leslie Pledger and her son-in-law, David Pledger. She is survived by son Wayne (Heather) Nibogie, grandchildren Patricia (Eric) Hanson, Russell (Naomi) Nibogie, Ryan Nibogie and four great-grandchildren, Niles, Mathew, Genevieve and Dominic, of whom she was very proud. Starr and Danielle Pledger were a big part of her life. She was fortunate to have numerous nieces and nephews who shared their families and lives with her. Evelyn was the last of five children born to Olive Daisy and John Henry Fletcher. Evelyn was immensely proud of her parent’s family backgrounds. Her father came to Alberta from Port Hope, Ontario, with his parents, in 1889, traveling by covered wagon. They homesteaded west of Airdrie in 1894, on land still owned by the Fletcher family. This is recognized in the Pioneer Families of Southern Alberta history. Her mother, Olive Strong came from Nebraska, by wagon, with her parents in 1894 and homesteaded near Olds. She recalled watching Calgary Stampede parades at her grandmother’s home across Macleod Trail from Stampede Park. During the war, she worked in Red Deer, where she met Johnny Nibogie. They married in 1944 and settled in Red Deer to start a family. In 1958, they moved back to Calgary to be closer to family. Evelyn worked for several years as a librarian at Queen Elizabeth and William Aberhart Schools. After retiring she travelled extensively throughout the world, mainly with the U of C travel program. She loved to talk about her trips to China, Japan, Machu Pichu and throughout the Mediterranean. She shared her travels with several friends and met long term friends from several other countries. She was a bright light at any gathering, with her travel stories and her positive attitude. She enjoyed excellent health until 2011 when she started to fail. She had to good fortune to move into Carewest Sarcee, where she enjoyed excellent care. Her family would like to recognize the staff for their caring attitude and the kind fellowship there. She was a lucky lady! An informal Celebration of her Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
