Obituary of Diane Gliynis YORK

December 20, 1956 – September 18, 2013 Diane was born on December 20, 1956 to Lucy and Louis York in Orillia, Ontario while living on the Ojibway Nation’s Rama Reserve and was the fourth child of seven. At age 6 Diane and her siblings were removed from their birth parents and home, to be placed into foster care. Diane’s younger years were spent in small towns in eastern Ontario. At sixteen years of age Diane was living and working in Oshawa, Ontario where she met Chester Uszacki her future husband. At eighteen Diane & Chester married. Their son Adam Uszacki was born in October 1974. The family moved to Kingston, Ontario where Chester completed his degree at Queens University while Diane worked and diligently maintained the family home. There were many happy years of sports activities and camping holidays the family enjoyed. Diane spent a lot of time skiing, biking, hiking, playing tennis and baseball which she enjoyed very much. Along with her athleticism she also carried with her a very quick wit and a sharp intellect which remained with her through the years. Diane and family moved to Fort McMurray, AB in 1979 and later to Strathmore, AB where they purchased a home. These were busy years with Adam playing baseball, basketball, and hockey which included many early mornings of travel to small surrounding towns. Diane worked at the local Co-op and as a caretaker at the Junior High school. In 1988 Diane moved to Calgary, where she worked at a laundry cleaner and eventually for Korite Industries. During the next many years Diane immersed herself in outdoor activities. She loved to hike in the fall while the leaves were colourful. She continued to enjoy outdoor activities including white water rafting, horseback riding, and hand gliding, activities she felt she had missed out on in her younger years. Diane moved back to Orillia twice trying to reconnect with family on the reserve, but always returned home to Calgary. Diane and sister Sonya shared many happy times. Diane had a beautiful spirit and enquiring mind. She was small, but mighty. She once sent a birthday card to her sister with the quote, “To find the beautiful, you must carry it with you”. What a fine, beautiful and loving gift, so elusive to herself, she shared with us. A gift, we who love Diane will cherish always.
