Obituary of John WOLNY

August 22, 1922 – Radziechowy, Poland September, 24, 2013 – Calgary, AB John Wolny, beloved husband of Krystyna of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the age of 91 years. John was born in Radziechowy, Poland and had 3 siblings. His mother unexpectedly died at a young age, and his father Franciszek remarried and had 5 more children. During WWII he was captured by the German army and sent to a labor camp in Belgium and forced to work in a coal mine. At the end of the war he became a prison guard for the American army and guarded his former captors. He stayed in Belgium for a short time later and worked as a miner again. John immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1950 where he worked in construction. John was close to his younger sister Hania, and sponsored her to come to Canada and introduced her to his friend Ted Metel. Hania and Ted later married and had a son Mark. John moved to British Columbia where he worked at a coal mine and power plant. John then moved back to Eastern Canada, where he lived briefly in Quebec and London, ON. He then moved to Alberta because his cousin Monsignor Slapa came here to establish a Polish parish. John began working for Canadian Pacific Railway and was introduced to his wife Krystyna, by a fellow co-worker, his future father-in-law. Krystyna and John were married on November 4, 1961 in Calgary, Alberta. John left the CPR in 1968 in order to be close to his family and began working for the Catholic Board of Education until he retired in 1987. He was a devoted Catholic and was very involved in the Polish Church (Our Lady Queen of Peace Church), and attended mass every day at Holy Name Church (across the street from their home). His faith and religion were extremely important to him; John was so excited upon the election of Pope John Paul II that he travelled to the Vatican to see him. His family was also very important to him and he travelled to Hawaii, Maui and the Dominican Republic several times with them, as well as several visits back to Poland. An important family tradition was Sunday meals after church with the whole family every week because he enjoyed time with his grandchildren as they meant the world to him. John will be loving remembered by his beloved wife Krystyna Wolny, daughter Mary Taylor and son-in-law Mark Taylor, grandchildren Candice, Ashley, Joshua Taylor; son Stanley Wolny and daughter-in-law Lisa Wolny and grandchildren Sydney, Zachary, Luke, Michael Wolny; sister Jadwiga; and brother Wladyslaw.
