Obituary of Isabella MITCHELL

April 5, 1934 – Newmill, Keith, Banffshire, Scotland April 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta Isabella Mitchell, beloved wife of Peter Mitchell of Calgary, AB, passed away on April 7, 2018 surrounded by family at the age of 84 years after a courageous battle with Alzheimer. Isabella is survived by her husband Peter of 59 years, three sons, Ian (Miriam), Cyril (Cheryl), and Peter (Kathy) all of Calgary. Grandchildren Eric, Charlotte, Logan, Nolan, Stephenie and Robyne of Calgary. Great-grandson Lucas of Montreal. Isabella was predeceased by her sister Margaret of Scotland and survived by her brother Billy and sister-in-law Christine of England, brother-in-law Ronald of Scotland, and her Cousin Margaret of Scotland and many relatives in Scotland, England, and South Africa. Isabella started her nursing career at the age of 17 years old when she left home with her cousin Margaret to attend Royal Samaritan Hospital for Women in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1958 Isabella made the journey to join Peter in Canada to start a new life, settling in Toronto where they were married on April 6, 1959. After a few years they returned home, with one year old Ian in tow, back to the family croft in Scotland. In 1967 the then family of five packed up for good and immigrated to Canada. From 1967 to 1969, Prince Alberta, Saskatchewan was home, then the move to Calgary in 1969. This is where Isabella met her closet friends Pam and Roger and Charlie and Jessie. Isabella spent a few years working as a cleaning lady for Scot Young (Western) Limited in the late 1970’s. She then moved on to a 15 year career working at the Sarcee Care West facility on Sarcee Road. This is where she meet her dear friend Evelyne. When she retired Isabella started bowling, making beer and wine, and knitting sweaters for the grandchildren. Her passion was for knitting, camping, baking, and hosting family dinners. Isabella also loved attending the many activities which grandchildren were involved with. Special times set aside were afternoon tea with Pam and trips to the Bay downtown on Friday for shopping and lunch with Jessie. She also had room in her heart for a several family cats over the years and feeding the birds in the backyard. No bird or stray cat went hungry in the family backyard. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Special Thanks to all staff at the Chinook Care Centre for the amazing and special care for Isabella over the past year. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer Society or to The Calgary SPCA. Interment with be in Scotland at a later date.
