Obituary of Joanne Christine HAWKES

August 24, 1937- Calgary, AB August 8, 2013 – Calgary, AB A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Joanne will be greatly missed by her devoted husband Jim Hawkes, children Terri Hawkes (Jeff Sackman) and Robert Hawkes (Susan Cullen); grandchildren Andrew and Michael Hawkes, Alexa and Jake Hawkes-Sackman; brothers Bill and Jim Herriot; and extended family and friends. Joanne was a native Calgarian who was proudly dedicated to Calgary and Canada. For her passionate work as an archivist she garnered the ‘Recognition of Contribution Award of Museums Alberta’ (2002). Joanne was a true partner with her husband, former Member of Parliament Jim Hawkes, in serving the people of Calgary West for more than 14 years, including her rewarding tenure as President of the P.C. Parliamentary Spouse’s Association in the early 1990’s. Joanne was also an ardent lover of the arts; she was a talented thespian, singer and pianist, and recently wrote a short memoir on a slice of Calgary history that was published by the Native Calgarian Society. Joanne loved spending time with Jim, her husband of 56 years, and doting on her grandchildren. Friends remember Joanne’s sparkling personality, interest in others, keen wit and feisty spirit. Despite her health challenges of the last few years, she showed great strength and good humour. A special thanks to family, friends and caregivers, all of whom cared for her with love, dignity and humour. Joanne/Mom/Grandma will live in our hearts forever.
